About

What awakens a human being?

What constitutes a life well lived?

Those questions sit beneath Mental Sweat, whether the immediate subject is travel, burnout, philosophy, technology, work, or an ordinary moment that refuses to remain ordinary.

The human being behind the work

Justin Markowitz is a writer, traveler, and creator whose work grows from lived experience. He studied philosophy at Fudan University in Shanghai, crossed the Atlantic by yacht, spent years moving through Asia and Latin America, taught skiing in Colorado, and survived pediatric leukemia long before any of those journeys began.

None of those experiences creates automatic wisdom. They created material: encounters with unfamiliar cultures, isolation, friendship, physical difficulty, ambition, failure, wonder, and the recurring discovery that a person can become trapped inside a life that still looks successful from the outside.

Why Mental Sweat exists

Mental Sweat is a body of stories and reflections about becoming more conscious of self, humanity, place, and the strange reality already unfolding around us. Travel is often the setting. Philosophy is the lens. Experience remains the source material.

The purpose is not to perform expertise or build a personality cult. It is to investigate what wakes people up, what numbs them, and what becomes possible when attention, perspective, and agency return.

Experience first. Reflection follows. Awakening remains.
